Check It Out #26 (07/09/16)

1. Underwater - Foxtrax
Long Island natives Ben (vocals, guitar), John (drums), and Jared (bass) began making their own brand of indie rock together in early 2015 after graduating from college. By the end of that yea, Foxtrax relocated to Los Angeles where they began honing their live show. Now they're sharing their once demos turned fantastically produced and mastered tracks, like their debut video for 'Underwater'... 

2. Mystery - Sol x Auralponic
Eclectic pop artist, Sol, is best known for her intimate approach to music. Raised in the suburbs of Southern California, Sol radiates the influence of her surroundings. 'Mystery' is her debut single, produced by Los Angeles' Connor Irias (Auralponic) and is representative of the rudimentary foundation of her music. It's a stunning, sultry track full of mystery...


3. Waterslide - Adam Harpaz
Adam Harpaz is a multi-instrumentalist and indie-folk musician, busking during the day and performing at venues during the night, whilst surfing in between. Born and raised on Sydney shores, the 21 year old singer-songwriter from Bondi has performed extensively over the past few years. Now he's releasing 'Waterslide' and also touring Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Western Australia over September and October, so if you're about, be sure to check him out! 


4. Fallback - Truitt
Comprised of brother and sister, Brett and Brigetta Truitt, the pop duo recently released their debut self-titled EP which features this track as the lead single. Having spent about two and a half years making an EP, they scrapped the project, soon after they took their music in a new direction and now here they are with a fantastic pop sound, enjoy! 


5. Nothing In The Desert ft. Jamie Lawson - Paul Mosley & The Red Meat Orchestra
After an exceptional reception to Paul Mosley's last album, he now returns with his seventh solo record. It features 20 songs, with 20 plus musicians from six different countries, 'The Butcher', is an epic ghost story told in songs. It's an incredible release and this is a wonderful single taken from the album, he's also got a fair few shows confirmed for the rest of this year, so make sure you don't miss out on those...

Spotlight: The Hunna (05/09/16)


The Hunna are a four-piece indie rock band, hailing from Hertfordshire, England. Ryan (vocals/guitar), Dan (guitar), Jermain (bass), and Jack (drums) released their debut single 'Bonfires' and it's b-side 'She's Casual' in October 2015 and have since built not only a local following but a worldwide one. They've spent most of 2016 in the studio recording their debut album '100', which has now been released, and sees them head out on tour with Jimmy Eat World, The Struts, Night Riots and The Shelters... 

'100' Album Review:
The Hunna are easily one of the most exciting indie rock bands of 2016 and this debut album proves why. Opening with their fantastic single 'Bonfire' and the infectious chorus that will have everyone singing and dancing along (easily one of my current favourite songs). Whilst the majority of their tracks are well layered and full of energy, 'Sycamore Tree' stands out as a slightly slower and steadier emotive track showing another side to the boys music. Another highlight of the album for me is 'Piece By Piece' a track that has hints of indie pop seeping in throughout. Overall, a brilliant album that deserves the hype it's getting (plus some), to also be able to listen through and have each song flow from one to the next is quite something - a brilliant release from the start of the process to the end.

Spotlight: Dreamers (02/09/16)



DREAMERS are Nick Wold (vocals/guitar), Nelson (bass), and Jacob Wick (drums) and this is their debut album ‘This Album Does Not Exist’. The Brooklyn-birthed band first launched their infectious tracks into the world with their independently released self-titled debut EP and their breakout single ‘Wolves (You Got Me), which garnered support from radio and online media. They’ve spent the last two and a half years on a surreal journey ‘from a self-induced homelessness, living in a practice space in Brooklyn for two years, to circling the US four times in a small van, seeing countless cities and meeting incredible people’. The now LA-based three-piece really are a band to watch and this debut album is one to be listened to on repeat!

'This Album Does Not Exist' Review:
This is a fantastic high energy release that I'm very glad does actually exist. Full of catchy choruses, infectious guitar riffs, brilliant bass lines and rhythms that will get you stomping your feet and tapping away with every beat. Dreamers have successfully created a 12 track album that reflects the rollercoaster they've been through, both personally and musically. The majority of the tracks are less than three minutes which leads to memorable songs that get stuck in your head, favourites have to be 'Sweet Disaster', 'Wolves (You Got Me)' and 'Come Down Slow', all of which present slightly different aspects of their genre and sound...

Check It Out #25 (31/08/16)

1. Bad Girl - SOULS
SOULS is the new and exciting project of producer David Gledhill; he combines his own music with recordings from the early 1900's and in some cases doesn't even know the name of the singer. Annie Mac, Lauren Laverne and Huw Stephens went crazy for the first track and now he's released 'Bad Girl', featuring the vocals of Ozella Jones. There's a debut album coming soon and we're really excited to hear more from this interesting and rather haunting project... 

2. Honest - Clay
Clay are four lads from Leeds, sit inbetween straight up indie rock and electro, think Honne and The 1975 mushed together. They recently released their EP 'Heaven' and have just toured the UK. They're hungry for success and I believe they're on the right path to getting there. Enjoy this one turned up loud! 


3. Your Eyes - Glass Peaks
Glass Peaks were founded not too long ago, and already they're sharing incredible, dark moody, upbeat tracks. Lewis (vocals, guitar, synths), Jake (guitar), Grant (drums), and Alfie (bass) have created such a fantastic sound that I've had on repeat for the last couple weeks since the track dropped and I don't think I'm gonna stop any time soon... 


4. Pharaoh - BOA
BOA have previously supported the likes of Saint Raymond and KYKO on tour, and their two breakout singles 'Holier' and 'Right Place Right Time' have racked up a huge combined 600,000 streams, as well as support from BBC Radio 1 and XFM. These guys have created a new world of music and it's one you won't want to leave. 


5. In The Sea - Molnet
A three year journey for Albin Marklund; beginning with sitting down and writing lyrics, melodies and song structures, then picking up friends and musicians along the way and now morphing Molnet into a full band based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Their debut EP 'Sometimes' was released back in April and now they release their latest single 'In The Sea' from said EP. It's a song that floats along gracefully, just like the title would suggest...

Feature: CAPTIONS. (29/08/16)


Southern California based four-piece, CAPTIONS., are an indie rock band consisting of John Figueroa, Joshua Zacarias, Marcus Paquini, and Adam Gangi. Their latest single 'Bearfights' is the first taken from their debut full length album 'ITERATIONS'. They've been compared to the likes of Real Estate and Band of Horses and are headed for exciting things! 

 General Questions:

 1. How old were you when you started getting involved in music and how?
John: I took piano lessons from the age of 9 to about 13 or 14, but had no interest in it at all, I just wanted to get my hands on a guitar and learn every Zeppelin and Cream song, which I finally did the following year. I first started writing songs with Adam about a year after we had graduated high school and the initial idea for CAPTIONS. was birthed out of those jam sessions.
Josh: I was 6 years old when my Dad face me my first drum lesson. I couldn't get the beat down and I wanted to stop so I could go back outside and ride my bike or whatever kids did before 'smartphones' were in existence. My dad didn't allow that so I cried a bit. Anyway, I got back on the kit and eventually got the beat down. It felt amazing and I knew right then that I wanted to play music forever. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. 

 2. What is the most inspiring musical performance you've ever seen?
John: It'd have to be a three-way tie, and all are amazing for different reasons that are probably a little too deep to even get into, but the three acts were Radiohead, Flying Lotus, and Tame Impala. 
Josh: That's a tough one, but I'm gonna go with Manu Chao at The Shrine (in the expo hall). I was probably 15 or 16 years old. I felt a connection with everyone there, and I didn't know that was possible to do with music. 

 3. Who have you been listening to lately?
John: KAYTRANADA, James Blake, Vondelpark, and Haitus Kaiyote have been in steady rotation for me. 
Josh: Porter. Death Grips. Omar Rodriguez Lopez. Adan, Xavi & Los Imanes. Tool (I went back in time with this one). 

 3 Qs for CAPTIONS.:

 1. How did you become 'CAPTIONS.'?
John: Adam and I went to high school together, and began writing about a year after we graduated. The group went through a few variations before we became the formation that we are today. We met Marcus after gigging with another band he was playing in at the time, and became a member after our original bassist left for the military. Josh came into the fray when he answered a craigslist ad we posted when our drummer moved up North. Within the first five minutes of meeting him, I knew he'd be the perfect fit. 

 2. Which continent would you most like to tour and why?
John: Without a doubt Europe. 
Josh: South America..... because of the food. 

 3. What process did you go through creating 'Bearfights' and how much did it differ from the other tracks on your debut LP 'Iterations'?
John: Like all of the songs on this album, there was a previous version or two of Bearfights that we were playing before we met Jacob and Leif. Once we got in the studio, the collections of songs we had written over the years were completely transformed and came together to become a cohesive album. 

 Random Q:

 Favourite pizza?
John: Favourite toppings would have to be mushroom, jalapeño, and Canadian bacon. If it came from either Toppers of Jimmy's slice in Ventura, it would make it allll the better. 
Josh: Pepperoni and Canadian bacon. From Toppers Pizza Place in Ventura county. (Hoping they see this so I can get some free pizza). 

 'Bearfights' Review:
This is the third single from CAPTIONS. debut album and I feel like each track has surpassed the previous. 'Bearfights' is a brilliant song that combines the best bits of shoe gaze and indie rock with dream pop and fuses them to create this wonderful trademark sound. A catchy rhythm, glimmering guitar and synths and vocals that skip over the top but manage to melt into the cracks perfectly too. Listen to this one and get ready to tap and hum along...

Feature: Civil Twilight (26/08/16)



Civil Twilight, originally from South Africa, and now Nashville based, (are / have just) released an acoustic rendition of their album ‘Story of an Immigrant’.  It’s been one year since the release of the original record and the band has been busy. Following appearances at Bonnaroo and Firefly this summer, as well as a headline tour over July, and a handful of shows with Andrew McMahon and the Wilderness; they’re also supporting Nothing But Thieves this autumn. The future is bright and exciting for these guys. 

General Questions:

1. How old were you when you started getting involved in music and how?
I started playing when I was about 13-14. I was asked to join the band cause nobody wanted to sing or play bass. I didn't like singing all that much, so when I was about 16 I started getting serious about bass and wanted to be the world's greatest bass player. Songwriting and a love of performing came much later on. 

2. What is the most inspiring musical performance you've ever seen?
Gosh, I've had the privilege of seeing some incredible acts. So, that's a tough one. I remember seeing Abdullah Ibrahim and the Cape Town orchestra play when I was about 17 and that was incredibly inspiring. I also remember when we'd just moved to the states, I went to see this band that I didn't know anything about called Muse. Just the three of them on stage, during the Absolution tour. It was mind blowing, and I spent my last dollars on a ticket for the following night. 

3. Who have you been listening to lately? 
I've been listening to Jaco Pastorius' first record a lot. It's one of my favourite albums of all time. 

3 Qs for Civil Twilight:

1. How did you guys become 'Civil Twilight'?
We've gone through a lot of names. But for some reason, we'd found ourselves in a predicament one night. I can't remember the circumstances surrounding it, but we needed a name before the morning. Andrew and I had, and have, a few pilots in the family, so we thought to look up aviation terms and that was the first one that popped up. So we took it and ran... or flew, should I say. Ha. Very close to the ground though. 

2. You're heading out on tour with Nothing But Thieves in the autumn, but who would be your two dream acts to tour with and why?
Radiohead would be terrifying. And The Band, if they were still around. 

3. Which is your favourite track from your acoustic album and why?
I liked the way the Billy Idol cover turned out. We actually met him a few days after the release and he was great. A true gentleman. 'Story of an Immigrant' turned out cool too, I thought. 

Random Q:

A movie you can watch over and over again?
Dumb and Dumber. Classic.

'Story Of An Immigrant' (Acoustic Album) Review:
Every single track on this album is a beautiful addition to the original album. You hear a separate emotive side to every song and they all hold a stunning tone and atmosphere of their own. It's genuinely hard to pick three top tracks from the release to highlight and suggest you listen to, so if you get a chance it really is worth sitting down of an evening and truly listening to the album, taking every beat and note in. 'Holy Dove' is a popular track stream wise, so it would make sense to point that track out, and the title track 'Story Of An Immigrant' is a favourite amongst the band and listeners too, and I think my personal current favourite is 'Letters From The Sky' for the lyrical emotiveness and vocal (as well as instrumental) rawness and overall empowering atmosphere. However, I'm sure by tomorrow, that will have changed yet again!

Rewind #10 (24/08/16)

1. Caught Up With You - Lewis Murphy
Lewis Murphy returns with his second EP 'Lighthouse' tomorrow (25th August). After a year and a bit spent writing, recording and gigging, he's now back with a fuller sound and an indie pop twist. 'Caught Up With You' is the lead single taken from the four track EP and leads the way for the rest of the release, if you like this, you're gonna love the rest of 'Lighthouse'. Get it here.

2. Sweet Company - Inspired & the Sleep
It wasn't too long along that we were featuring Inspired & the Sleep and their single 'Die Slow' (and the incredible accompanying  stop motion music video). This time we let you know about their latest release 'Sweet Company', it's another fantastic creation from Max and Bryce, more dreamy indie pop music - enjoy! 

3. Who Cares? - Harry Seaton
Harry was one of our first features almost three years ago, and in that time his music has really grown, in sound, and support. His latest project is EP 'Self-Titled', which features this lead track 'Who Cares?'; much like Lewis he's got an even fuller sound now, full of catchy hooks and memorable lyrics you'll be singing along to in no time... 4. Slow Down - The New Coast
Nick and Chris are back to release their second single 'Slow Down' and announce their debut EP 'Paraga Beach' (out 4th November). It's another fantastic 'New Coast' track, shimmering guitars, wonderful vocals and subtle beats building throughout. I'm a big fan of this song and I'm sure I'm not the only one...

5. Gracious - Izzy Flynn
'Gracious' is the latest single from Izzy Flynn and follows up her successful debut 'Medicine'. It's soulful, powerful and dreamy, Izzy has created a brilliant soundscape and her vocals run smoothly over the top. Yet another fantastic track that's been added to a fair few of our playlists...
